Eric Vs. 365 - Day 81 - Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 is weird. No, not because it's really Mario characters copy and pasted into a different game and it's full of strange gameplay mechanics and goofy enemies and really is all just Mario's Dream. It's weird because, in a vacuum, it is an amazingly fun game, but in reality it was sandwiched between two of the greatest games of all time and was doomed from the start to always look and feel and be perceived as being a little off. We explore this and more so click to read and watch gameplay video.

My first experience with SMB2 was renting it as a kid along with SMB3 at the same time. We loved SMB1 and expected more of the same from the sequels. Imagine our surprise when SMB2 was completely and utterly different. As a dumb little kid, I kind of hated it. Part of me was sort of into it, though, because a lot of things in "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" suddenly made a whole lot more sense, but I couldn't wrap my head around why everything had to change so drastically. At that time we quickly moved on to SMB3, and loved it, and SMB2 was relegated to the role of "That one Mario game that isn't as good" in our discussions.

As an adult I appreciate SMB2 much more. Flat out - Super Mario Bros. 2 is a good game. For some reason, though, I never feel like playing it for very long. The levels get more complicated the further in you get, and the platforming gets more intense and challenging, and I just sort of lose interest. That happened while recording this video, in fact. I got to a tough level and got bored.

This video was kind of just a "crank it out and get it done" sort of video, to be honest. When you're trying to play 365 different games sometimes you gotta do quick easy ones once in a while to pad out the schedule and give you more time to work on other stuff. That isn't to say that this video is bad - I have a story or two and actually remember some secrets and l337 strategies to skip stuff - but it was quick and easy just because the game is so familiar. Mario 3 and Mario World will also be quick and easy, but I'll be more energetic for those.
