Resident Evil 4 is just OK. There. I said it. I know that's blasphemous and RE4 is considered one of the best games of all time, but I think it gets worse the further into it you get - just like every other Resident Evil game. It's still good and the first couple hours are truly amazing, but after that it just ... isn't. Click to read more and watch gameplay.
I kind of blew my wad in the opening paragraph, but I really do think that. I love pretty much everything in Resident Evil 4 up until you leave the village and go to the castle. Then it's all downhill from there. That whole village sequence, though. Awww yeah! The chainsaw man. Going through the farms. The swamp. The fight with El Gigante. THE FREAKING LAKE! Your encounters with big giant beardo Mendez. It's all so amazingly good.
Then you go to the maze like castle full of un-fun timed survival fights, lame Ashley sections, and bad boss fights. Then there's the island, which introduces even more annoying garbage and terrible new enemies. While I wouldn't say any of this is objectively "bad", it all pales in comparison to how perfect the first two chapters of the game are.
That is the problem with pretty much every Resident Evil game, though. The first chunk is by far the best and then the rest is stretched out too far and too thin and fails to live up to the beginning. RE2's police station is perfect, then the sewers and lab sucks. RE1's mansion is amazing, then the underground labs suck. RE7's mansion is ridiculously good, then the boat and mines are awful. RE6 actually doesn't have this problem, because it has multiple shorter campaigns, but it's problem is more that none of it was great to begin with so there wasn't any drop off in quality. Ha.
Anyway, Resident Evil 4 is just OK. I like it. I respect it. I've bought it 3 times and then played the Xbox One Game Pass version for this video. I just don't think it is one of the best games ever and it certainly isn't my favorite Resident Evil game.
