Eric Vs. 365 - Day 123 - Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered

Our final spooky scary game for Halloween (though, most likely not the last horror game overall ...) for Eric Vs. 365 is Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered. This is sort of a bare bones remaster, but it does look significantly sharper and the gameplay still holds up, so it's worth the $30 asking price for fans. Want to know something weird about me? Despite growing up in the 80's and 90's, and watching and loving all of these movies, I've never actually owned a copy of any Indiana Jones, or Back to the Future, or Ghostbusters movies. No VHS or DVD or Blu Rays. Nothing. Isn't that freaking weird? It's like how I consider the Foo Fighters as one of my favorite bands but have never owned an album. Maybe someday I'll actually buy stuff.

I've owned video games for pretty much everything though, of course, including the original release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game from 2009. I really enjoyed it back then when I reviewed it for About.com, but it's one of those games that kind of gets worse the further it goes. The first few levels are loving homages to the movies and existing canon, but then when they have to start doing original levels and new stuff it all kind of fell apart. It's still fun overall.

This remaster is pretty much a quick cash grab port of the 2009 PC version to current-gen systems, but it's fine. It definitely looks a lot sharper and cleaner than I remember it looking on Xbox 360, so I'm satisfied with it. Some things certainly look better than others, and some cutscenes are noticeably out of audio sync, but ... eh.

My favorite discovery about this remaster, and the clearer graphics, is that the characters have fairly good facial animation. I shot Bill Murray's Peter Venkman character a whole bunch with my trusty proton pack and the looks on his face were priceless. That's definitely the highlight of the video. That, and the dumpy dough faced idiot nameless "New Guy" character you play. Could he be any more generic? Gosh!
