Eric Vs. 365 - Day 94 - Yoshi

For day 94 of our year long journey towards a Guinness world record for futility we played the oft-forgotten Yoshi puzzle game for NES. It was Yoshi! On NES! In a puzzle game! It was pretty boring, but when you're 9 years old you kind of just played whatever and were happy with it. Click to read more and watch gameplay.

As I say in the video, I got Yoshi for my 9th birthday. I liked puzzle games so my well meaning parents bought me one of the newest ones on the market. It was fine. It was fun enough.

It was also super shallow and boring and not dynamic at all so it got pretty repetitive pretty fast. The same music. The same visuals. Over and over again. It does speed up and they start throwing three pieces at a time at you, but the core concept is just incredibly one-note so while the game does get more complicated it doesn't ever get more interesting.

The most interesting thing about the video is the story I tell at the end about getting stung by a bee while trying to play Yoshi. We had an old TV from the 70's that was probably 23" or something, but because it was an old CRT it was huge. The power button on it was a spring-loaded button that poked out a good half-inch - plenty of space for a bee to park on. The family room in our house was in the basement, so it was dark, and I didn't think I needed to turn lights on just to play some video games. One day I went down to play NES and turned on the TV and got stung by a bee for the first time in my life. I've only ever been stung by a bee twice. I've been bitten by spiders as many times or more than I've been stung by bees. That's crazy.

Wow. What a fun story.
