Eric Vs. 365 - Day 190 - Earth Defense Force 4.1

Earth Defense Force is so good. Everyone needs to know this. Except when it's bad. Then it's awful. But most of the time it's good. Like with Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair. This isn't just a port of EDF 2025, like I originally thought, it's actually a fairly substantial re-imagining of it with lots of new stuff and I'm in love all over again. Read on for more and to watch gameplay.

Earth Defense Force is just lovely comfort food. You can turn your brain off and just blast away at thousands of giant bugs and space ships and robots and aliens and have goofy dumb fun. It is a video game-y video game with oldschool sensibilities in a world where games like this have been long forgotten in favor of cinematic and serious and boring slowly paced crap. I, for one, will just keep playing EDF and having fun, thank you very much.

EDF 4.1 makes a lot of improvements on EDF 2025. The game is largely the same, but many missions have been remixed with more NPC soldiers, tanks and other weaponry out in the field with you, more enemies, different enemies, and all that good stuff. The late-game dragon enemies have been balanced to not be such a pain in the butt, thankfully. The visuals are also sharper and cleaner looking and the fog and depth of field effects used to mask the PS360 era limitations have been removed. It looks good. And it plays good. And there's tons to do and it's so fun and OMG I'm nerding out.

This also marks the first of what I'm calling "Kaiju Mondays" where I hope to have a giant monster game every Monday. I don't know how long it'll last, but I've got quite a few lined up and ready to go. This joins "Fanservice Friday" and "Anime Wednesday" as themed days I'm going to try to do each week. The rest of the days will be just whatever random stuff I can find. I think this will work better as I've found doing themed content is a lot of fun (and it can be produced quickly once I'm in the mood for something) so I'll be doing this for a while.
