Eric Vs. 365 - Day 192 - The Slayers (Super Famicom)

The Slayers anime is one of my all time favorites, so when I found out a Slayers game existed, and had an English translation, I had to play it. The Slayers on Super Famicom isn't so good, unfortunately, as it's a pretty run of the mill mediocre RPG, but I'm glad it exists. Read more about why I love The Slayers and about the game, and watch gameplay, right here.

Man, I love The Slayers. The first three seasons are amazing. Yes, I also like Slayers TRY even though everyone else complains about it. The new season they pumped out much later sucks, though. Why do I like it so much? Well, I love Lina Inverse. She's amazing. I love the magic they use. I love the supporting cast of Gourry and Amilia and Zeldagis and all the rest. I love the lore of the world and how everything connects. It's just an incredibly fun show. I also have to say that I really like the English dub. Sure, there are some rough patches like the early Zelgadis and Amelia episodes where their voice actors weren't finalized (and they sound awful) but once their voices got sorted out the dub is excellent. And Lisa Ortiz as Lina is perfect.

This Super Famicom game came out a year before the anime started and is based on the Slayers light novels, which means I was pretty lost right away. Your companions that join Lina early on are characters I'm not familiar with, so it was weird from the start. I do know that the main cast eventually show up and join your party, but I didn't get there.

The game itself is kind of crap, though. It's a basic Final Fantasy 1-style RPG that just isn't terribly well executed. It's one of those games where you have to talk to literally everyone and go into every house and check every object in order to make progress, so there was about 35-minutes of wandering around lost and not knowing what to do in the middle of this recording session that I cut out. I almost gave up and then suddenly an NPC had new stuff to say and then we were off to kill a hydra. It wasn't especially fun or noteworthy in any aspect.

But I'm glad a Slayers game actually exists. I wish someone would make a modern action game or something with the license because it would be amazing. Just imagine chucking Dragon Slaves around a big 3D world and messing some fools up because they wouldn't give Lina some free food or something. Someone please make this!
