Catgirl Without Salad: Amuse Bouche should be a game I like. I like catgirls, shmups, and quirky humor - all things this game is crammed with - but it kinda sucks to actually play. If it cost more than $8 I probably would be pissed, but for that price I guess it's was an OK April Fools surprise release. Read more and watch gameplay here.
Catgirl Without Sald barely contains catgirls. The main character is sort of a catgirl but you'd never be able to tell if you just glanced at her. She also has that unfortunate trait where being kooky and random is supposed to be her personality, but ask anyone who knows a kooky random person in real life, it isn't endearing, it's just annoying. This game was only available on PC for several years, and it kind of shows its age by the style of humor it uses.
The gameplay is OK-ish. It's a shoot-em-up but your weapons are all silly and goofy. You have a 2D platformer weapon where your "bullets" are little Mega-Men who destroy enemies when they jump on them. There is a bust-a-move bubble weapon. A mini golf weapon where the balls bounce all over the screen. A Pac-Man-style cat weapon where you shoot a Pac-Cat out and can control it to hit enemies multiple times. There's also a DDR gun where you have to press the right directional button in order to do maximum damage.
I give them credit - the weapons are pretty innovative - but actually using them kind of sucks. They're awkward and annoying and not particularly fun to use outside of the brief surprise when you see a new one. And outside of the weapons, it is a bog standard super simple shmup that doesn't hold your interest for very long. Good thing it's also super short.
I do have to say I like the presentation. The music is awesome.
All in all, Catgirl Without Salad is a bland meme game that kinda blows.
