Eric Vs. 365 - Day 292 - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

I don't like a lot of popular games. I'm not just trying to be contradictory, either. I love games. I want to love all games. But some games just aren't that great. I think it has to do with the fact that I've played many times more games overall in my life than most people so I have a much broader range of games to compare stuff to, which results in beloved classics just seeming sort of "meh" to me. Today's game that will surely sour your opinion of me even more is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Read more and watch gameplay here.

Even when I was a kid I hated Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I hated the cutesy art style. I freaking absolutely hated baby Mario. And I just didn't really enjoy the core gameplay. I loved Mario games back then and was excited for a new sequel to one of my favorite games ever, but Yoshi's Island was not even remotely what I wanted.

I've sort of figured out as an adult that I just don't like 2D platformers very much in general, but as a kid that was pretty much all we had. Perhaps that's actually why I don't like 2D platformers - too many memories of terrible repetitive NES and SNES games that all looked and played the same.

It isn't as if I don't like any 2D platformers at all, but I'm incredibly picky about them and if the art and mechanics don't immediately click with me I have a hard time getting into them. As I mentioned, the art style and baby Mario was an instant turn off. As an adult, it's those things plus the weight of everyone else saying Yoshi's Island is the best platformer of all time that makes me want to run shrieking into the night in the opposite direction.

I'd rather play Yoshi's Story on N64. Yes. I'm serious.
