Eric Vs. 365 - Day 226 - Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip

"Zombieland: Double Tap" was a wholly unnecessary movie and Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip is a doubly pointless video game tie-in. At least the movie is fun while being pointless. The game is actually pretty bad and they had the nerve to ask $40 for it! Read more and watch gameplay here.

Let's take a trip back to the past when bad movie tie-ins were a thing. Every new "blockbuster" movie would get a game - usually a crap 2D platformer back in the 8 and 16-bit days and usually a 3D action game in the 32-64-bit and beyond days - and with only a few exceptions they were bad. They were cookie cutter and formulaic and designed to be pumped out ASAP with as little effort as possible. And they generally sold well. Well enough that publishers could absorb the negative feedback and bad reviews because they made money.

That all changed in the PS360 generation because games just cost way too much to make and studios couldn't make enough money off of their bad movie games for it to be worth it. So movie tie-ins kind of disappeared (or went to mobile) and the world was better for it. Once in a while you'll still see one, but even they are generally designed to actually sort of be good and add to the movie rather than just cash in on the name.

And then there's trash like Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip that pops up out of nowhere and reminds us of the bad ol' days. This is a top down twin-stick shooter that is about as basic and boring as possible. It is totally generic and boring and not fun or interesting to play aside from the bad voice acting sound-a-likes doing bad impressions of the film cast. It's a short boring throwaway experience that only hardcore fans of the franchise (all two movies) would be interested in.

Here's the thing - if it was $10-20 I wouldn't be so hard on it. Making it a twin-stick zombie shooter wasn't a terrible idea and playing co-op is fun - but it is $40 goddamn dollars which is absolutely ridiculous. Avoid.

Oh, I make fun of dumb ass Ninja in the video for a bit. KthxBye.
