Eric Vs. 365 - Day 242 - Dead or Alive 6

Dead or Alive 6 is a freaking tragedy. It's a really great looking and great feeling fighting game buried under a million tons of garbage DLC. I love it, but I also hate it because I feel like I only have 10% of the game. Koei Tecmo is gross, and not just because of the fanservice this time. Read more and watch gameplay here.

The good news is that I only paid $20 for Dead or Alive 6, and if you can get it for that or less it's a really fun fighting game. The bad news is that, as of this writing, there are 4 (!) "Season Pass" DLCs ranging from $80 to $93 EACH. The season passes include new characters and a bazillion costumes, but don't actually give you all of the content. If you want everything in DOA6 you have to spend a lot of damn money.

I really, really hate this content model. Koei Tecmo has basically given up on making Dead or Alive 6 appeal to anyone but their most die-hard fans because they know they'll make more money off of selling them costumes than they would selling a normal game to everyone else.

It's a shame, too, because the game is really, really fun. Dead or Alive has always been very accessible and very entertaining to both play and watch, and DOA6 is no exception. It feels great to play. It also looks exceptional, too. They also actually made an effort to make DOA6 less bouncy and, uh, gigantic, and the result is a surprisingly classy entry compared to past games in the franchise. Aside from the hundreds of sexy costumes, DOA6 isn't terribly embarrassing.

I love the way it looks. I love the way it sounds. I love the way it plays. I hate the DLC.
