Eric Vs. 365 - Day 294 - Soul Calibur

Soul Calibur is pretty easily my favorite 3D fighting franchise. I just love how the different weapons and fighting styles really make the matches dynamic and interesting above and beyond other fighters. Maybe that's all in my mind, but I sort of get bored of Tekken after a while but Soul Calibur always keeps me coming back. Today's game is Soul Calibur 1, so read on for more and to watch gameplay.

Everyone knows Soul Calibur, but how many people know the actual first game of the series, Soul Edge? Back in my college days we had a Soul Edge arcade machine in the basement of the dorms and I played the hell out of it. Much to the annoyance of my friends, too, because I could get most of the way through it before typical arcade cheap ass screw you over difficulty took over, so I'd be standing there for a good 10-minutes a credit while they waited around impatiently. Heh.

I also played Soul Blade - the PS1 release of Soul Edge - a lot back in the day, too.

Soul Calibur is where it really all came together, though. It was a perfect blend of incredible gameplay and, finally, arcade perfect presentation that put it over the top. Soul Calibur on Dreamcast was the best looking console game anyone had ever seen and it was freaking amazing. It also brought the world Ivy Valentine, which I have to say I'm very grateful for.

I played the XBLA Soul Calibur port for this video. I also have the Dreamcast version, but didn't want to unlock characters so I took the lazy way out.
